The mill's collection of fine book and conservation papers comprises the following three ranges:
OFF WHITE BOOK PAPERS
This range was conceived to match European papers typically from the late 1600's. These papers are available in weights between 25 and 120 gsm and are made in both laid and wove mould mark versions. Four stock colours are produced namely, pale, dark, stone, and soft cream. There is also a 120 gsm deep beige laid hemp paper. Apart from this, all papers are manufactured from cotton and flax, have four deckle edges and conform to our archival standards.

The pale and dark versions contain shive which enables the papers to blend with most papers made during the 17th and 18th centuries. Other shades and weights can be produced to order.
MACHINE-AGE COMPATIBLE BOOK PAPERS
Many books and other works produced following the introduction of acidic wood pulp in the 19th century for producing machine made wove papers, are now deteriorating rapidly and this has lead to the demand for archival quality matching papers for their restoration and conservation. In response to the demand a new range of four papers, tinted to match the various ageing effects created by the acidity of the original papers, has been launched. Made from cotton and linen each paper is produced in 65 and 100 gsm weights, cold pressed to simulate the calendered finish of a machine made paper. Initially produced for the French market the names are crème froide, rougeâtre, beige sombre and bronze.

The existing range of coloured papers has recently been remodelled to include a greater proportion of flax, to improve colour uniformity and tear strength. The papers are now manufactured in 90 gsm weight.

Fifteen colours are available of which some are only produced to order only.  The 10 papers normally available are detailed in the sample book.  .

Certain of the blue papers have been very successfully used for fine drawing and pastels. For further information on this click on: Rebecca Alzofon's website.
IMPORTANT PROJECTS
The same basic approach has been used to manufacture specialised products for use in:
  • The restoration of a Guttenburg Bible in 1999 using paper produced to their match.
  • The restoration of large format 19th. century lithographs (1.2m x .8m) by the maps and
plans department of the French National Library (Bibliotheque Nationale de France).
  • The complete rebinding of the archives of a prominent English educational institution.
  • Limited edition books and prints.

LABORATORY TESTS
The ageing tests carried out by the University of Manchester's Institute of Science and Technology on a typical conservation paper at 90° centigrade, 50% relative humidity, for a period of 576 hours, revealed little change in the properties of the paper and the pH tested by cold water extraction averaged 8.4.

The French National Library has carried out internal tests also to their own satisfaction.

BOOK ARTS AND LETTERPRESS
Many of the conservation papers have been used successfuly for limited edition books and have responded well to letterpress and other printing techniques from 75 gsm in both coloured and off-white papers.

LEAF CASTING PULPS
We have a range of cotton pulp white or cream & deep beige pigmented leafcasting pulps which can be mixed to achieve the desired tone which are available from the mill or Talas in NewYork.

ARTISTIC APPLICATIONS FOR BOOK PAPERS
  • Wood Block Engravings.
  • Lino Cut Printing.
